Pearl Izumi Road N0 Review

This shoe is so simple and functional that it's almost challenging to review. It's light, nimble and smooth. That's about all you need to know, but we'll delve a little deeper anyways. Weighing in at 6 ounces with Pearl Izumi's most minimal level of neutral cushioning in the E:Motion line; the Pearl Izumi Road N0.

 UPPER
The upper on the N0 is just as fantastic as any other upper in the E:Motion line. Albeit a slightly narrower last and toebox, as should be expected from a racing flat, the mesh is still flexible and breathable offering unparalleled comfort. The overlays are welded on and the upper remains seamless for a sock like fit, in which I experienced zero hot spots. They run true to size.

MIDSOLE
The N0 features a very flexible and low profile midsole while still being springy and responsive. Pearl Izumi really nailed the EVA blend in this shoe giving it a surprising amount of cushion for how little material is underfoot. PI says the stack height is 1mm at initial contact and 4.5mm during the full loading phase due to Dynamic Offset, while Runningwarehouse.com measures a 6mm offset.
I will say that the N0 is a minimal design with no arch support. The flat nature of this shoe put a little extra stress on my arches which will definitely take some getting used to, but that's to be expected as I don't often run in a flat.

OUTSOLE
The outsole is a mix of exposed EVA with blown rubber in the forefoot and heel for added durability which provides full contact and great ground feel from foot strike to toe off.
The EVA on the outsole has shown a bit of wear where it's lacking blown rubber with less than 50 miles on them (not shown in these photos). My guess is that this won't effect the longevity of the shoe, but I wouldn't expect more than 250 - 300 miles out of them.

OVERALL THOUGHTS

The Pearl Izumi Road N0 is one hell of a racing flat! It's especially awesome for intervals and fast stuff on the track. I don't think I've worn a 6 ounce shoe before and it really does feel like you're flying in them! I'd imagine it would be a great 5K, 10K or 13.1 race shoe as well. It's a no frills, bad ass flat with a smooth ride in a very lightweight package.

What are your thoughts on the N0?
